The Carpet Foundation Quality Mark

The problem with the factors mentioned in the previous pages is that although they are simple concepts in themselves they interrelate with each other in quite a complicated way to give an overall view of carpet suitability. And it is the suitability descriptions found on carpet which have an important impact upon the consumer's final choice.

Carpet Manufacturers use many ways of describing suitability for end use but these can be broadly described as follows: -

  • LIGHT DOMESTIC
  • MODERATE DOMESTIC
  • GENERAL DOMESTIC
  • HEAVY DOMESTIC
  • EXTRA HEAVY DOMESTIC

The problem for the consumer is how valid are the claims made for suitability; are they measured and what is to stop companies from over-claiming?

The Carpet Foundation has developed a SUITABILITY EVALUATION SYSTEM which uses British and International carpet tests to produce an overall measure of carpet suitability. Test scores are fed into a framework of weighted factors which produce an overall score and a corresponding suitability description.

Now the claims made by the Carpet Foundation members can be validated using an objective system of measurement.

Products which will qualify for the use of The CARPET FOUNDATION QUALITY MARK will be those which have test results and an overall measure of suitability which supports the manufacturers suitability claims, i.e. The claim for suitability for end use will be backed up by the test scores in the Suitability Evaluation System.
