Yet another biased and hysterical report from the Healthy Flooring Network urging consumers to avoid buying carpet is currently doing the rounds. This time their report entitled "Poisons Underfoot" tries to convince consumers that carpet contains chemical hazards which threaten humans. Using the flimsiest of research carried out in one of their own members laboratories on a highly selective unrepresentative range of carpet and vinyl floorcoverings the Healthy Flooring Network once again is trying to deter consumers from buying the UKs number one floorcovering carpet.
Michael Hardiman Chief Executive of the Carpet Foundation which represents the interests of the UK industry was not surprised at the latest outburst from the HFN: -
"This is another phase in an orchestrated anti-carpet campaign which started last summer. The HFN is a front for a company called New Harbour AB based in Sweden the home of wood and laminate floors!"
"Their latest "research" is typical of their highly questionable approach. They dont quote chemical exposure levels; they fail to establish a link to humans; their minute sample is not representative of the market; their findings are ambiguous; the tests were carried out by one of their own members and surprise surprise they have not carried out any tests on wood the very flooring which they promote in all their literature."
"The proprietor of New Harbour AB is Joakim Bergman a long standing Greenpeace employee who refuses to disclose the sources of the funds he uses to support the HFN. Why should a small Swedish environmental company take so much interest in UK flooring consumers. Is it by any chance connected with the fact that the UK is the largest user of carpet and Sweden is the largest producer of wood and laminate floors? Its just too much of a coincidence!"
"All reliable scientific evidence shows conclusively that carpet is safe and it is not surprising that UK consumers dont take any notice of this seriously biased sensationalist report and others like it!"
The Carpet Foundation represents the leading carpet manufacturers in the UK who between them have over 1000 years of manufacturing experience and produce 60% of the carpet made in Britain. Carpet is the overwhelming favourite flooring for UK consumers and 97% of people have carpet in their homes. Wood and laminates represent only 7% of the UK market.
