Top 10 Carpet Buying Tips Styles and Designs
Why Choose Carpet? What Fibre? Your Questions Answered

WHAT FIBRE?

The quality of your carpet depends upon the type of raw materials used and how well the carpet is made. Typically the following fibres and blends are used in carpet manufacturing today: -

WOOL

Wool is durable, does not soil easily, is naturally flame retardant with good appearance retention. It is generally acknowledged that the best carpet wools come from Britain and New Zealand and members of the Carpet Foundation use 80% of all the British wool used in carpet.

NYLON

Nylon is extremely hard wearing and has the highest abrasion resistance of all fibres. It's outstanding durability, ease of dyeing and response to anti-stain treatments are reasons for its popularity.

POLYPROPYLENE

Polypropylene is inherently stain resistant with high abrasion resistance and wear performance.

POLYESTER

Polyester is light and bulky with good stain resistance, wear properties and a lustrous appearance. It is mainly used in plain very thick luxury saxony type carpet.

PILE YARNS

The type and quality of yarn used, the weight, and pile density is essentially what you are getting when you buy carpet.

CARPET PROTECTION

The addition of a stain-blocker can enhance the performance by preventing the artificial dyes, such as those found in some food and drinks, from permanently staining the fibres. The most widely known and used is Scotchgard.

Many of the carpets manufactured by Carpet Foundation members feature protective treatment.
