Shop Local Week

This week is Shop Local Week when shoppers are being urged to hit their high street and support local businesses.

Nearly one million shops filled bustling Victorian high streets but the 1980’s saw a big change to ‘out of town’ shopping malls. Some say it is ‘high noon’ on the high street but Britain has always been a nation of shopkeepers. Only the fittest survive in tough times and ‘specialists’ have never had it so good. Shoppers are flooding back to local butchers, bakers and independent retailers. They appreciate the brilliant personal service, genuine expertise and knowledge, not to mention competitive prices and quality products.

One-off local independent retailers should be celebrated – the ‘small wonders’ of the high street. They are all different and not giant, faceless entities. They are passionate about what they do and well-informed about what they sell. They are the ‘beating heart’ of communities.
